Thinking of running for Council? Town Hall has some information to share with potential candidates

Municipal Election Day is October 22, 2018
Oakville residents will cast their vote for Mayor, Town Councillors, Town and Regional Councillors, Regional Chair and School Board Trustees on Monday, October 22. The upcoming municipal election provides Oakville residents with the opportunity to engage with local government if you’re interested in running for Council or just want more information as a voter.
“Public engagement is critical to the work and success of any municipality,” said Vicki Tytaneck, Oakville’s Town Clerk. “A municipal election is the most significant way that residents can engage with local government to shape their community. The town is committed to providing voters and potential candidates with important election information throughout the process.”
If you are a potential candidate, here are some tips on where to find helpful information:
- April info sessions:
- The town is co-hosting “So you want to run for Council?” for residents interested in running for a seat on Council in the 2018 municipal election. This free session will be led by municipal lawyer Fred Dean and takes place on Wednesday, April 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Town Hall.
- Led by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, this free session will focus on running a municipal election campaign, legislation changes, campaign financing and more. Join us Friday, April 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Town Hall.
- Full details on how to run for office will be available on our 2018 Municipal Election page. The Clerk’s department at Town Hall is the go-to place for municipal election information. Other helpful resources include the Province of Ontario, Association of Municipalities of Ontario and Halton and French School Board websites.
- File your nomination papers between May 1 and July 27. You must be 18 years or older, a Canadian citizen and live in Oakville, or be the owner or tenant of land here or be the spouse of someone who is. More information and candidate criteria is available on our 2018 Municipal Election page.
